From the moment children are conceived, they’re affected by our food choices. We believe one of the best ways to change the fortunes of the next generation is to start from pregnancy.

That’s why we’re part of the little red book every new mum receives and, also, in the Startwell Sheffield parent training – offering advice to parents on how much sugar is too much during pregnancy and beyond. If you’re a midwife, health visitor, community worker, GP, health professional or dentist working in Sheffield, here are some ways you can help local families to keep healthy.

  • Why Pledge?

The Startwell Sheffield Family Programme is for parents and carers with children under five and gives useful advice to make sure children are eating a balanced diet.
  • Why Pledge?

Distribute our literature offering advice to your patients and their families on how they can cut down on sugar. It’s the ideal time for patients to read this information when they are waiting to be seen at your clinic.
  • Why Pledge?

Use your position to prescribe a fitness-related plan that encourages people who are overweight or obese to get out and move more.

  • Why Pledge?

Midwives and health visitors, when you give out the personal child health record signpost women to the relevant pages and offer advice about the importance of protecting children from sugar.

Highlight the importance of achieving a healthy weight before getting pregnant again and how breastfeeding is a great way to use up calories and give the baby the best start in life.
